Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson had his media day interview today for his upcoming fight at UFC 279 Diaz vs. Chimaev and seemed to be in great spirits. Tony is set to have his re-debut at welterweight this saturday facing off against Jingliang Li.
It has been over 10 years since Ferguson has fought at welterweight and him returning is not new “news” at all. Actually Ferguson has been hinting at this since 2020 in interviews. Ferguson has had a lot of frustration in getting a fight in the lightweight division. Feeling the promotion isn’t doing their best to accomodate him with opponents. Ferguson has dealt with all sorts of reasons due to his inactivity. Some fighters pulling out at last minute, others to take fights with “bigger names”, or just plainly don’t want to fight him, as he puts it.
In the midst of his media scrum today, Tony was asked about him and Khabib on The Ultimate Fighter as coaches. Tony stated that, “we got the green light from the brass, we are just waiting on Khabib’s fat-a**”. Tony further stated that, “I am the one to get him out of retirement”, “that dudes [Khabib] not retired“. Going on to say that Khabib’s father, who has now passed wanted this fight to happen. Despite this bout being cancelled five times
Tony doesn’t just seem content on coaching against Khabib, he is intent fighting Khabib. That is something that even for the potential sixth time, every fan would be interested in that fight as if it was announced for the first time.
