Former middleweight champion Chris Weidman spoke with Ariel Helwani on his show The MMA Hour.
Among wide array of topics the two discussed, the question arised if Weidman, like McGregor, had considered taking himself out of the USADA testing pool after suffering a similar injury breaking their fibulas in combat.
McGregor broke the left fibula back in July of 2021 and Weidman the right in April of 2021.
Weidman expressed his interest in the option of being able to pull himself out of the pool in situations were there are injuries like his saying,
“If it was up to me I would have liked as soon as you get injured, I would like that there is an option here for you because it might have helped”.
But didn’t seem in the cards for Weidman because he was worried about not getting back to competing, discouraged about “being out too long”, as he said.
Also stating that by the time he heard that this was a “thing” [removing oneself from the testing pool] he had no interest in it.
But before Ariel could get his next question out he drove the point home that he isn’t blaming McGregor for doing anything wrong saying,
“Look i dont mind that, I’ve been through hell, I would have loved the opportunity to do that, so I get it, I just didnt know”.
Weidman discussed how painful this ordeal was wondering if he was ever going to get through it.
And how he was worried at the beginning that they might have had to amputate his leg, leaving him out of his career for life, but this option was quickly removed as he started treatment.
Up until now, Weidman has said he had 29 surgeries just to be able to walk again.
