Welp, today it has finally been made official who the coaches will be for The Ultimate Fighter season 31.
Lightweights, Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler will be the new coaches for the season and face off against eachother in a scheduled bout at the end.
Unlike when Conor was last on TUF 22, he was against former Bantamweight champion, Uriah Faber’s team. The two did not fight at the end as the seasons usually go.
There were a lot of other options that the UFC was willing to go with and that the fans wanted.
There was Tony Ferguson vs. Coach Khabib Nurmagomedov, which would not have resulted in a fight at the end, but because of the long standing beef between the two, and the 5 fights that got cancelled before.
Another was actually one of the most popular options at the time when it was red hot, the Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal beef. Colby seemed like he was calling for it, but Masvidal and the UFC didn’t move, or were silent on what went on behind the scenes
As much as this will be a fan friendly fight, the two being strikers who like to put on a show for the fans, was this the best option?
With Michael Chandlers nice, positive guy attitude, and McGregor’s ever changing Nice Guy/Bad Guy attitude it is not really certain how entertaining this will be for TV.
The “nice guy” doesn’t really bring in views. Ask Covington about that!
Plus, the seasons that everybody remebers are the seasons with the controversy. For instance TUF season 10 with light heavyweights Rampage Jackson and Rashad Evans. Everybody loved that season for the beef between the two. And everybody iconicly remembers that door Rampage beat to a pulp.
How about TUF 3 with Chael Sonnen and Wanderlai Silva. “I can’t let you get close” the famous saying by Chael before the little tussle the two had.
Heck, even going back to TUF season 22 with McGregor and Faber. There were so many classic sound bites we would be here naming them all. All of which came due to controversy between the coaches
What weight are they even fighting at?
