Jafel Filho Earns His Contract After Almost Three Grueling Rounds
Season 6, week 9 of DWCS kicked off with a bout in the bantamweight division between the Brazilian favourite (-180) Jafel Filho, who is 29, and Venezuelan (+155) Roybert Echeverria, 27.
Filho, who coming into this fight had a record of 13-2 and on a 4 fight win streak, had finished 12 of his 13 wins with 4 KO’s and 8 submissions. Coupling all of that with 6 first round finishes.
Echeverria on the other hand came into this bout undefeated with a record of 7-1, finishing 5 of 7 wins, 4 of them by way of KO, and 5 first round finishes.
The first round started of with them both feeling eachother out and exchanging leg-kicks. Filho eventually gets Echeverria to the fence to take him down but Echeverria rolls out and lands on top in his guard. Filho takes Echeverria’s back and gets a body triangle but cant manage to secure a submission and Echeverria escapes getting to his feet, throwing leg-kicks inviting Filho to get up before the round finishes.
Filho entered round two getting the better of Echeverria on the feet, then Filho took him down. Echeverria threatened with a leglock but it was unsuccessful, but he did manage to get to his back where Filho was in the same position as the first round on his but getting leg-kicked. This time, quickly, referee Mark Smith stood them up.
The last round both came out striking very aggressively with it possibly being 1-1 on the scorecards. It wasn’t until Echeverria threw a lead-leg head-kick and missed, that Filho caught him with a left hook and dropped him, then finishing him with ground-and-pound.
Jafel Filho is now 14-2, and this is his 5th win by KO. This ultimately was enough for Dana White and matchmakers to give the Brazilian a UFC contract.
Filho was transferred to the hospital due to damage he sustained to his calf from his opponents calf-kicks.
