In comedic spirit as always, Derrick Lewis, #8 ranked heavyweight had his media day interview for UFC Fight Night 215 and brought the laughter.
Lewis, joking about how after his 2nd loss in a row this year (both TKO’s), that some say ended in an early stoppage in July of this year to Sergei Pavlovich. He went on a “mushroom trip” to clear his mind. But further cleared up he doesn’t use the drug.
He talked about these two losses saying, “this hasn’t been my year” and how he didn’t skimp on the training sessions in camp stating, “this year I trained probably the most I ever trained for my last both fights and it didn’t go my way“.
While he did seem to be in good spirits, he did seem to be recognizing that possibly the end of his career is soon saying, “there is not much to be motivated for at this point in my career“. But still saying he has motivation to win because “his back is against the wall and doesn’t want to lose 3 fights in a row“.
The main focus seems for him to get back in the Octagon and get a win because Lewis describes his losses as haunting saying,”I don’t stop thinking about my last fight until I get a new fight“.
He further teetered on the conversation of retirement saying, “I just want to come out here this week and give it all that I got, you know, I’m almost at the end of my career, and I don’t wanna have any coulda, woulda, shouldas, whenever everything all said and done“.
They say when a fighter starts to talk about retirement it is their time, or that it is coming soon.
But regardless of his time being finished. The Black Beast, Knockout king with the most KO’s, arguably the hardest hitting fighter in the UFC and the most comedic on the mic with some of the most memorable interviews.
He will be a Hall of Famer and Texas and UFC Legend.
